Lancaster City Amateur Swimming & Water Polo Club

Lancaster’s new look team ready to take on Great Britain

August 29, 2013

With a week to go until the start of the 2013/2014 British Water Polo League, Lancaster City Swimming and Water Polo Club are looking to regain their title after losing out to Cheltenham last year who won the league for the first time in 44 years.

This year will see some big changes to both the senior team both in and out of the water. Team managers Duncan Holmes and Jeff Parker have stepped down and made way for Tracy and Nigel Sharpe. The team will be coached by Rysz Detko and Zak Sly with Ron Winn working with the team at training.

The end of last year’s season saw goalkeeper Dave Bush, Colin Burgess and Chris Hartley retire from playing in the British Water Polo League. This will allow goalkeeper Marc Robinson to step up to the full time position and Lancaster youngster Lewis Peach (17) experience his first senior British Water Polo League after showing some great potential in Lancaster’s local league games.

Now the Olympics are over and the Lancaster members are back in the UK after taking a year out to play abroad. Lancaster welcomes back Olympians Ciaran James, Glen Robinson and Alex Parsonage along with two new signings for the team; Roger Kennedy (20) and Declan Thompson (18). Also returning to the team after a gap of four years is Ryan Pinington.

Although there are some new and old players returning to the team this year, there are still plenty of the regular members playing. Tom Curwen (last year’s league top goal scorer), Decland Ellwood, James Wannap, Michael Brown, Robert Simpson, Noel Howson, Scott Sharpe, Ben Walker and a few others ;)

The team are also looking to introduce some of the younger members to play in their first Division One British Water Polo League season.

Lancaster first weekend is at Ponds Forge, Sheffield over the weekend of 7th & 8th September. They will be taking on two Scottish teams Caledonia on Saturday at 11.15am and Portobello on Sunday at 9.45am.

The Lancaster Senior team are looking for some sponsorship for the 2013/2014 season and if you are interested please e-mail them at
