Honours even

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

Without the aray of players normally available Elliot, Jake, Lawrence, Noel, Robert, Sam L, Steff and mainstay goalkeeper Zak.  Lancaster took along young players Ben Walker, James Alker, Kamil Plucinski and Scott Sharpe.  Also coming out of retirement and making it a family affair, Mark Smith turned up to join his brother Stephen Smith and nephew Sam Smith.  Their mother/grandmother Irene Smith – the oldest supporter in the viewing gallery, was also there to cheer the team on.

After a poor start and only managing a draw against Fleetwood the team gradually picked themselves up and made amends as the day went on.  As eventual winners of their group they then faced a straight final with Newcastle (apparently fielding their National League team).

This turned out to be quite a thrilling game if slightly controversial following a disputed Newcastle goal (many felt that the ball did not cross over the line) and a valid Lancaster goal by Ryzsh Detko being disallowed which would have put the Lancaster side two goals ahead, as a consequence the game resulted in a 2-2 draw.  Extra time was played, which again concluded in a draw (1-1).  Due to imminent pool closure (and the ‘older’ players needing some beer!!) it was agreed by the team captains and officials to share the cup.

A special mention goes to the younger players Ben, James, Kamil and Scott who all put in a gallant performance with the support of the more experienced players mentioned above, including the ever attacking forwards Decland Elwood and Michael Brown.
