Seniors make it to British Championship finals
Salt Ayre Sports Centre was host to two big water polo championships at the weekend where home team, Lancaster City Swimming and Water Polo Club, qualified for the National and British water polo finals.
On Saturday night, the senior team was also playing battling it out in the British Championships as Lancaster City and Bristol Central looked to take the top spot in their group. The winner would be taking on current champions Cheltenham in the semi-finals also at their home pool GL1 on Saturday 14th May.
With G. Robison missing the game, Llewelyn, Titley, Cossutti and Armstrong, who had already played two games joined the rest of the senior team.
Lancaster started off strong with a goal each from Harrington and Curwen and left-hander Parsonage bagging himself two. Bristol hit the back of the Lancaster net twice, with goalkeeper Robison saving a penalty. This gave the home side a 4 – 2 lead after the first quarter.
The second quarter matched the first; with another four goals scored by Lancaster, Captain Curwen with two and Parsonage and Abbott one each. Bristol again found the net twice giving Lancaster a solid 8 – 4 lead at half time.
It seems that four was Lancaster’s lucky number for this game with another four goals put away in the third quarter again, Curwen slotting two away and Abbott and Pinington one each. Bristol managed to find the back of the net three times but Lancaster continued to increase their lead as they went into the final quarter 12 – 7.
Outstanding saves from Robison in goal denied Bristol to convert anything in the last quarter and Lancaster pushed forward for four more goals, Curwen putting away his final two and Parsonage and Gaywood one each. The game finished with a 16 – 7 victory for the local side.
The team would like to thank The Park Hotel for providing food for both teams after the game, Kendal Mint cake and AMS Sport for their continued support.
