Club - Youths’ retain title

Lancaster youth have become the 2012 National Water Polo Champions for the second consecutive yuear after beat City of Manchester 5 – 4.Lancaster’s victorious team was.

Dominic Lock in goal, he made crucial saves throughout the game. Sebastian Reichel, he worked tirelessly and covered a lot of water harassing the Manchester attack. Zak Lamb showed great polo awareness, worked intelligently for 4 quarters.

Joe Barker protected the pit defender with great skill and composure, and supported the attackers. Dean Akister defended admirably throughout keeping Manchester forwards under constant pressure. James Pratt starred defensively as he kept the shackles on the Manchester pit forward. Josh Barret worked hard as he covered more water to offer a real threat down the right hand side of the play.

Andy Robinson supported the forward play with his countless attacking breaks, causing Manchester to defend at times desperately. Sam Routledge was the real thorn in Manchester’s side. He was voted the Matches Most Valuable Player producing a threat every time he got the ball in the attacking half of the pitch. Sam scored all Lancaster’s goals and with a bit more luck could have scored more. Thomas Prayle, Jordan Titley ,Fen Bleasdale and Aaron Mason ,although they did not get much time in the water during the final had produce enormous contributions to the team during the preliminary and qualifying rounds.

Swimming - City Swimmers County Outing.

City Swimmers County Outing

Well done to all the City Swimmers who made the 2011 Counties at Liverpool and Manchester.

15 members of Lancaster Amateur Swimming and Waterpolo Club recently travelled to Liverpool and Manchester over two weekends to compete in the Lancashire County Championships. All swimmers had achieved qualifying times between November 2010 and February in ASA swimming competitions. Many of the swimmers had never before qualified for County Level swimming. Some of the younger swimmers had not experienced swimming in a 50m pool, which compared with a 25m pool is more difficult because there are fewer turns and reduced push off advantage, with PBs harder to achieve.

Three swimmers competed in the first part of the Championships in Liverpool.  9 year old Grace Nolan Barnes and 11 year old Jessica Shatford, both had outstanding performances in the 200m breaststroke, Grace winning her heat and achieving a PB whilst Jessica achieved a PB and qualified for the NW regional finals.  12 year old Alex Bradley showed outstanding form achieving a PB in 200m backstroke.

Two weeks later in Manchester, 15 swimmers competed in the second part of the championships.  Grace Nolan-Barnes swam in five events:- 50m freestyle, backstroke, breast-stroke and butterfly; and following an excellent performance achieved another PB in 200m freestyle.  Grace completed the competition in sixth place overall in the 9 year old age group.

The youngest swimmer from Lancaster was 9 year old Marcus Robinson, competing in a 50m pool for the first time and achieving a PB in 50m backstroke.  Also competing in the 50m backstroke were 10 year olds Alistair Edwards and Elias Giles.  Both boys had outstanding performances with Alistair finishing fourth overall for his age group in this event.

In the 10 year old girls age group, Amy Shaw performed well in a strong field in the 50m breaststroke and Holly Salisbury continued to show her potential competing in the 50m freestyle and backstroke, achieving PBs in both.  11 year olds Jessica Shatford and Olivia Robinson had excellent performances:- Jessica in 50m and 100m breaststroke and 50m freestyle and Olivia in 100m, 200m and 400m Freestyle and 200m IM.  Both girls achieved PBs in all their events.  They also achieved qualifying times for the NW regional competitions, Jessica in 100m breaststroke and Olivia in 200m IM.  An outstanding performance from 12 year old Izzy Maher in 50m freestyle achieved a PB.  16 year old Sarah Hodgson, true to form, gave outstanding performances in 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, with a PB in 100m freestyle.

11 year old Adam Leach achieved a PB in 50m freestyle. 12 year old Alex Bradley had great performances in 50m and 100m freestyle achieving PBs in both events.  13 year old Jordan Titley continued to impress with his performances in freestyle, gaining another PB in 100m freestyle. 16 year old Harry Sykes showed excellent form winning his heat in 50m freestyle adding to the list of PBs for
the Lancaster swimmers.

The North West regional championships will be held in June.  Jessica and Olivia will be joined by Remi McVey, who achieved a regional qualifying time for 400m IM in a recent competition at Salford.
